Take Action: Tell EPA to reject cause marketing on toxic pesticides
Send your comments to the EPA by Thursday, March 27, 2008 and oppose cause marketing on toxic pesticide products.
(From Beyond Pesticides' website) On October 31, 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) opened a comment period on their Draft Guidance for Pesticide Registrants on Label Statements Regarding Third-Party Endorsements and Cause Marketing Claims. After being urged by Beyond Pesticides and other concerned groups, EPA extended the closing date from December 28, 2007 to March 27, 2008. Your opportunity to provide EPA with critical feedback on its proposal to allow third-party endorsements on pesticide labels ends in less than a week!
Cause marketing on pesticide labels would allow manufacturers to place the symbols of well-known organizations on their products, such as in the deal Clorox made with the American Red Cross last year. Attaching an image (like the Red Cross symbol) to a label can imply false safety of a product, which is a direct violation of EPA’s own labeling law. EPA’s proposed law would allow any company to make similar partnerships, putting consumers at risk of misinterpreting the toxic nature of the product. For more information, including a sample letter and directions on submitting a letter, visit http://www.beyondpesticides.org/watchdog/alerts/causemarketing-3-21-08.htm.

Second Annual Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder Intergenerational Contest
The Environmental Protection Agency, Generations United and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc. are teaming up for the Second Annual Rachel Carson Intergenerational Poetry, Essay and Photo Contest.
The contest is designed to increase environmental stewardship and public awareness of environmental issues and encourage interegernational interactions. In The Sense of Wonder, Ms. Carson wrote that she would endow every child with "a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." However, "if a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in."
I hope you can help us spread the word about this wonderful opportunity for the young and old to collaborate on a creative project expressing their sense of wonder for nature.

New tool from CEHN: Children's Environmental Health Article of the Month
(From CEHN press release) The Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN) announced a new communications tool – the Children’s Environmental Health Article of the Month – to translate scientific findings in this emerging field to families, educators, health care professionals and others. “Scientists are just beginning to understand the many ways in which substances in a child’s environment can harm her developing systems,” said Cynthia Bearer, M.D., Ph.D., FAAP, Associate Professor of Pediatrics & Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University, CEHN Board member and Chair of the CEHN Science Committee. “As lead and mercury research has shown, exposures that cause little or no harm in an adult can lead to irreversible damage in a child.”
CEHN Board Chair Ramona Trovato cited lead in toys, plastic additives, asthma, and climate change as examples of current children’s environmental health issues. Trovato previously headed the U.S. EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection.
The Article of the Month is geared toward increasing awareness and communication within and outside of the field of children’s environmental health. Read the first Article of the Month at: www.cehn.org/science_aom.htm.

Host a Green Cleaning Party!
It's almost spring - and that means spring cleaning! This year, as you prepare to wash away the season's grime, host a green cleaning party with Women's Voices for the Earth!
What is a green cleaning party? These fun parties are a great way for you and your friends to learn how to make non-toxic cleaners from common ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and olive oil - ingredients time-tested for effectiveness!. Sign up to host a party at: www.womenandenvironment.org/greenclean and WVE will send you all the information you need (including recipe cards, supply lists, and an informational DVD) to make your party a success.
Why make your own cleaners? A growing body of evidence suggests that chemicals in some conventional cleaners may cause harm to your health. And because cleaning manufacturers are not required to list all ingredients on their product labels, you have no way of knowing what chemicals are in products, and therefore, how to avoid them. The best solution is to make your own!
