Nursing Advocacy in Environmental Health
Pilot Course: Advocating for Healthy Environments and Healthy People
FEEDBACK ON THE OPPORTUNITY BELOW IS NEEDED BY JULY.
The Michigan Public Health Training Center invites you to participate in the pilot course, Advocating for Healthy Environments and Healthy People. This online, self-paced course is now available at no charge to you. Your feedback on the content and mechanics of this course is vital to create a course that will be a valuable and effective training tool.
This self-paced course provides key information and resources for nurses who wish to be more effective advocates for protecting the environment and human health. This course includes several slide presentations, case studies, video clips, and provides internet-based resources. The five modules will explore the following areas:
1.. What is Advocacy?: about advocacy, nursing competencies, and strategy development
2. Framing Environmental Health: exposure resources, special vulnerabilities, precautionary principle
3. Who's In Charge?: government agencies, EPA initiatives, expert sources
4. Influencing Government: how a bill becomes a law, lobbying, executive functions, regulations
5. Influencing Process: working with the media, coalition-building
The pilot was developed by three nurses who are leaders in environmental health advocacy: Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH; Brenda Azfal, RN, MS; and Pamela Ortner, RN, BSN, COHN-S.
This course will take approximately 3 to 5 hours to complete, but we would appreciate your feedback even if you are only able to take a module or two. You can access the material anytime via the internet and work at your own pace. Pilot participants will complete online registration and provide online feedback via short surveys after completing each of the five modules. Participants will be asked to track the time spent on each module in order to determine how many nursing contact hours will be granted for the course when it is officially launched later this spring. High-speed internet connection is strongly recommended.
To access the course, please first register at: http://lessons.ummu.umich.edu/2k/EHN/survey_001_02
You will have access to the pilot course upon completion of registration.
If you have any questions, please contact Shelley Coe at scoe@umich.edu.
Funding for course development was provided by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
